Health Insurance: FAQ

QUESTIONS ABOUT THE 2013 - 2014 PLAN
Does the Kaiser Student Health Insurance Plan cover my pre-existing conditions?

Yes, we understand that many students may have health conditions and deserve to have quality insurance regardless of their condition. Your pre-existing condition will not raise the cost of the plan and your coverage does not depend on the severity of the condition. Rest assured that you will be covered for any condition you may have during the entire time you are enrolled in the plan.

What are the coverage dates?
  • Annual: August 1, 2013 - July 31, 2014
  • Fall: August 1, 2013 - December 31, 2013
  • Spring/Summer: January 1, 2014 - July 31, 2014

Is dental coverage included in the Kaiser Student Health Insurance Plan?

No, dental coverage is not included. You may view various, non GGU affiliated, options available through the student insurance division at Wells Fargo Insurance Services or discount plans through Delta Dental.

Is vision coverage included in the Kaiser Student Health Insurance Plan?

Yes, the plan covers vision exams for no charge (deductible waived). Kaiser Permanente members are also entitled to a 20% discount on eyeglasses and contact lenses purchased at Kaiser Permanente Optical Centers.

Are my dependents covered under the Kaiser Student Health Insurance Plan?
  • Dependent coverage is available for an additional fee. Please see the current health insurance brochure for fees and information.
  • Dependents can be enrolled on a term basis from the date the student is enrolled in the plan or within 31 days of one of the following qualifying events: marriage, birth, adoption, or arrival in the U.S.
  • A newborn will automatically be covered for Injury or Sickness during the month of birth, or the mother's hospitalization if she is a Kaiser member, whichever is later. Coverage may be continued for that child when Wells Fargo Insurance Services is notified in writing within 31 days from the date of birth and by payment of any additional premium.

Are domestic partners covered under the Kaiser Student Health Insurance Plan?

Yes, coverage is available for domestic partners. Please see the current health insurance brochure for fees and information.

Will I be covered while I study for the bar?

2013-2014 coverage will continue through July 31, 2014.

After I graduate, is there an option for coverage beyond July 31?

You may continue your coverage with Kaiser Permanente, but the plan will not be associated with Golden Gate University. There are a variety of plans to choose from. We recommend that students first apply for individual and family coverage plans, since these premiums are lower than with that of the continuation plan. However you do have the option to enroll in the continuation plan for up to nine months. You may contact Kaiser at 800-464-4000, or visit their website to learn more.

To explore other insurance options, see the GGU Law Student Guide to Finding Health Insurance.

Will I be covered if I visit another school for the summer?

Your coverage will remain in effect for the entire term you have purchased. If you travel outside of the Kaiser Permanente coverage area, you will continue to have coverage for emergency or urgent conditions.

How do I find a Kaiser Permanente primary care physician?

You can find a doctor by visiting www.kp.org where you can search by name, location or facility.

What if I have an emergency and cannot get to a Kaiser Permanente facility in time? Will I be covered if I receive medical care at another hospital emergency facility?

If you have an emergency medical condition, call 911 or go to the nearest hospital. When you have an emergency medical condition, Kaiser Permanente will cover emergency care anywhere in the world.

Does Kaiser Permanente have prescription coverage under this plan?

Yes, prescriptions are covered with a copay of $10 for generic and $30 for brand name drugs.

If I need to see a specialist within Kaiser Permanente, what are my options?
