Golden Gate University School of Law invites applications and nominations for the position of dean of the School of Law. Golden Gate University, in San Francisco, CA, is a private not-for-profit institution and a major center for professional study in the fields of law, business, taxation, and accounting. The dean is the chief academic and administrative officer for the School of Law. S/he reports directly to the President of the University and is a member of the University's senior management team.

  • Associate Dean – Admissions
  • Associate Dean of Library Services
  • Associate Dean of Graduate Law Programs
  • Associate Dean of Budget, Administration & Enrollment Management
  • Associate Dean of Law Career Services & Alumni Services
  • Associate Dean of Bar Services
  • Director, Women's Employment Rights Clinic
  • Director, Environmental Law & Justice Clinic
  • Director of Publications & Media Relations
  • Law Development Director / Annual Fund Director (Shared position – 20% law)
  • Senior Administrative Assistant

There are 42 full-time faculty and 53 full-time staff at Golden Gate University School of Law.


The Law School dean works closely with faculty and the staff to plan and implement strategies to achieve the long-term growth and viability of the Law School.

Specifically, the Dean will:
  • Advance the mission of the Law School.
  • Bring strong administrative and academic direction to the School of Law in all aspects of the school’s operation and pedagogy, including academic affairs, administration and budget, law student recruitment, law student enrollment, law financial aid, and law alumni relationships.
  • Provide leadership in long-range and strategic planning that addresses evolving academic and financial challenges and opportunities facing legal education and ensures effective and efficient operations and financial stability.
  • Lead the full- and part-time law faculty, encouraging and supporting faculty scholarship, teaching excellence and service.
  • Develop and expand JD and LLM programs of instruction and curriculum delivery, including online offerings.
  • Plan and execute student recruitment efforts to attract a highly qualified and diverse student body and meet enrollment goals.
  • Lead the Law School’s advancement activities. Assist VP of Advancement in articulating and executing law school fundraising goals, including annual fund, major gift, planned giving and capital/endowment campaigns.
  • Serve as principal liaison between the University and the Law School’s accrediting body, the American Bar Association; assure continued compliance with the American Bar Association accreditation standards.


The successful candidate for Dean of Golden Gate University School of Law must have a Juris Doctorate from an ABA-accredited institution. He or she will be an accomplished legal scholar with a record of academic and scholarly accomplishment sufficient to merit appointment as a full professor of law with tenure. S/he will be an innovative leader and an outstanding administrator. S/he must be a leader of high integrity, inclusive in leadership style, involved in the school’s day-to-day operations when needed, and able to work in a highly diverse environment.

The successful candidate has demonstrated:
  • The ability to attract, retain and develop outstanding faculty, students and staff, including increased diversity recruitment.
  • The ability to advance academic standards and learning outcomes for student success and to utilize assessment tools for continuous improvement of student learning outcomes.
  • A commitment to collegiality and collaboration within the school and across the University, with the ability to nurture a strong sense of community among and between all schools.
  • Business acumen, including the ability to plan and manage multi-year budgets aimed at long-term financial stability and sustainability, and to assess financial impacts of proposed actions and initiatives.
  • A commitment to, and experience in, gifts, grants and contracts and other university advancement activities.
  • Strong communication and leadership skills.
  • An ability to inspire and motivate others, through words and deeds.
  • Support for faculty governance.
  • Administrative experience, preferably in an academic environment.
  • Experience with ABA accreditation standards and processes.
  • An interest in technology and an understanding of how technology supports academics.
  • Support for a diverse educational environment.
